Train to Machu Picchu: PeruRail vs. Inca Rail

The travel distance between Cusco and Machu Picchu is around 118 km (73 miles). Some travellers take the bus and hike to Machu Picchu, but by far, most travellers take the train to Machu Picchu. Or, more correctly, they take the train to the town of Aguas Calientes and then take the bus, or walk the last 8 km to Machu Picchu. Two companies offer reliable train services to the town of Aguas Calientes (also known as Machu Picchu Pueblo): PeruRail and Inca Rail Both provide a variety of options to suit different travel styles to Machu Picchu, from budget to luxury.

The railway from Cusco to Aguas Calientes

In 1907 the Peruvian government authorised them to construct a railroad from Cusco to Sant Ana/ Quillabamba. However, because of the challenging terrain, it wasn’t until the early twenties that the first section was opened. In 1928 this section was extended to Aguas Calientes (111 km). The urge for this extension was partly fuelled by the re-discovery of Machu Picchu by Hiram Bingham in 1911. Since 1931 the railroads in Peru are controlled by the Peruvian government. It took until 1978 before the railroad finally reached Quillabamba. However, due to the challenging environment and limited usefulness, the last part of this railway between Quillabamba and what is now called ‘Hidroelectrica’, was abandoned in 1998.

PeruRail

Train to Machu Picchu in Aguas CalientesPeruRail was founded in 1999, in part as a response to the growing tourism demand towards Machu Picchu. At the time, the only major way to reach the ancient Inca site was by foot on the Inca Trail, or by road, bus and hike along the railway. PeruRail was established as a private company with a mandate to improve rail transport for both locals and tourists traveling to Aguas Calientes, the town at the foot of Machu Picchu.
In 2006, PeruRail’s parent company, Ferroviaria Andina S.A., became part of the Cosmos Group, a major conglomerate in Peru involved in several industries, including airports, ports, other infrastructure, transport and tourism. Together they formed a partnership with Belmond, a global luxury brand, to operate the Belmond Hiram Bingham train service. This is the most luxury way to travel to Machu Picchu.

Inca Rail

Inca Rail train to Machu PicchuInca Rail was originally founded by a group of private Peruvian investors. It began as a small operation offering a single route between Ollantaytambo and Aguas Calientes. The focus was on premium service, with elegant train interiors. High-end customer service at a lower price, and a commitment to delivering a more curated experience than what was offered by PeruRail. However, in 2016 Inca Rail was acquired by the Carlyle Group, a U.S.-based global investment firm. With the acquiring from the Carlyle Group, IncaRail received a new cashflow, which was invested in more train services. Currently the only real difference between Inca Rail and PeruRail is style.
