Despite being one of the smaller countries in South America, Ecuador offers an extraordinary variety of landscapes and activities that attract explorers from around the world. From towering and smoking volcanoes in the Andes Mountains to the wildlife-rich Amazon rainforest, stunning Pacific beaches, mysterious cave systems and the famous Galápagos Islands, Ecuador provides countless opportunities for adventure!

The Ecuadorian Andes

The Andes Mountains run through the center of the country, creating breathtaking views and challenging outdoor experiences. Travelers can hike around Cotopaxi, one of the world’s highest active volcanoes, or trek to the beautiful turquoise crater lake of Quilotoa. Experienced climbers often attempt to summit Chimborazo, the tallest mountain in Ecuador and the point on Earth that is closest to the sun due to the planet’s equatorial shape. These high-altitude landscapes make Ecuador a paradise for hikers and mountaineers.

The Ecuadorian Amazon

Nearly half of the country is covered by Amazon jungle, offering visitors the chance to explore one of the most biodiverse ecosystems on the planet. In places such as Yasuní National Park and the Cuyabeno Amazon Reserve, travelers can navigate through narrow jungle rivers, observe colorful birds, sloths, monkeys and even pink dolphins! It is a great way to experience the incredible wildlife that thrives in the rainforest. Guided tours allow visitors to venture deeper into the jungle while learning about the local environment and indigenous cultures.

The Pacific coast of Ecuador

Popular beach towns such as Montañita Salinas and Ayampe attract surfers, backpackers, and outdoor enthusiasts looking for strong waves and a vibrant coastal atmosphere. From June till August, visitors can also go whale watching and witness humpback whales along the coast. Those who peek underneath the oceans surface even have a good change to spot a giant manta ray!

The Galapagos Islands

These islands played a key role in the research of Charles Darwin and the development of his Evolution Theory. Visitors to the Galápagos can snorkel with sea lions, see marine iguanas resting on volcanic rocks, and observe giant tortoises in their natural habitat. Skilled divers among us will even be able to swim close to the elusive hammerhead sharks. Few places in the world allow travelers to get so closely with wildlife, making the islands a highlight of any adventurous trip.

Known for its enormous underground chambers, legends of lost civilizations, and whispered tales of alien contact, the cave has drawn adventurers and researchers for decades. Among them are two unlikely figures: Neil Armstrong, the first man to walk on the Moon, and Will Smith, Hollywood actor and global icon, who visited the cave as part of a National Geographic docuseries.
