Huaraz (3000 m altitude) is located at 519 km north-east of Lima and is the capital of the Ancash province.
Ancash has a coastal and mountain region, including the magnificent and colorful Callejon de Huaylas (Huaylas Valley) between the White and Black Mountain Ranges (Cordilleras Blanca and Negra) in the Peruvian Andes.
As its name says, The White Mountain Range boasts beautiful white peaks, many of them more than 6000 m, like the highest tropical mountain in the world: The Huascarán (6768 m). The Cordillera Blanca is the second highest mountain chain of the world, after the Himalayas, but the same in beauty, being one the best destinations in Peru.
The Cordillera Blanca, extends almost 180 km from north to south and is largely included within the Huascaran National Park. The Cordillera Blanca has a total of 663 glaciers (29 of them at 6000 m or higher), including the Alpamayo, considered by many to be the most beautiful mountain in the world. Its 269 lakes and 41 rivers are an important hydrological resource and provide water to the basins of the Santa, Pativilca and Marañón rivers.
The Cordillera Huayhuash is located south of the Cordillera Blanca, between the Huánuco, Ancash and Lima provinces. Its great attractions are its huge and steep white peaks, its turquoise lagoons and green valleys, situated in a wilder nature with very few numbers of tourists coming. The trekking along the Huayhuaysh Range is considered by international guides and travelers as the second in beauty of the world after the Anapurna Trek in Nepal.
